Logo Design: THE POP CULTURE COMPANY

My good friend Rober Quijano went out limb (especially in this economy) to form The Pop Culture Company, his own comic book store in Houston, Texas.  He's been doing quite well with his store, which is a testament to his determination and creativity.

He not only sells comic books, but toys, action figures, collectibles, original artwork, graphic novels, statues, art books... just about anything and everything that any good comic book store owner would carry.  However, he's doing everything he can to, more and more, service a broader 'pop culture' audience, if you will.  It is his mission to form his store into an innovative leader in the retail comic book industry.

When originally asked to design the logo, the initial concept of the design was to create an easily recognizable logo with a strong graphic sensibility, evocative of the eye catching Marvel Comics covers of the 1960's.  All the while, still maintaining a fresh & vibrant layout that would evoke a mixture of nostalgia & vitality.

I first did many pencil sketches (one of which is posted below in plain pencil and in a color comp), then narrowed down the style Rober liked the most.  Then I began the task of building this in Photoshop.  I know I should have built it in Adobe Illustrator, so the vector sharpness will be very evident.  However, I'm a novice when it comes to Illustrator.  So, I made the logo as an incredibly large file, so I can size it down to whatever it needs to be.

One day I'll learn Illustrator, I promise.

Here's the logo, put to good use!
