2D Animation Storyboards: CARTOON NETWORK [2D Animated Series] - GENERATOR REX, Episode 033: "Night Falls"

As I said previously, I had the great privilege to storyboard for Cartoon Network on episodes of Generator Rex!

This segment was a fun departure from all the action/adventure stuff, in that my challenge here was to make a 'talking heads' sequence visually interesting.  There were certainly moving parts, such as the ship flying & landing, the ladder extending and lowering, things like that.  But all still within the context of characters just talking to one another.

I am always interested to see how closely the animation keeps to the boards I did, and this episode was pretty spot on, with a couple of exceptions.  The shots of the Mayor in his office reacting to the ship arriving had been added after I turned in my boards, and there are some minor tweaks in character placement and composition that you can see if you choose to compare the final frames (linked below) to the finished animation.

My sequence runs just over 4 minutes.  Here it is:

Episode 33, titled "Night Falls", was directed by Rick Morales.

Previsualization / Environment Background Design: WOLVERINE and the X-MEN

Above are some of the background designs I did for the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon series for Marvel Animation, Toonz Entertainment & Noxxon Entertainment Inc.

I illustrated these designs for producer Susan Norkin at Kickstart Productions.  As Head of Production, Susan has overseen all aspects of production since the founding of Kickstart. She recently produced the animated series, Finley the Fire for Hallmark Entertainment, and animated pilot The Amazing Scew-On Head for Sci Fi Channel.  She was an Associate Producer on the Emmy-award winning Babylon 5, it's spin-off Crusade and Hypernauts.   She was the supervising producer on the 3D animated series Voltron: The Third Dimension, Max Steel and Dan Dare.

I try to only work for the best, you know.

When I had started working on these Wolverine backgrounds, I had been used to working at a more generous pace for other clients.  It took some getting used to for the more fast-paced scheduling required for such a tightly structured cartoon series.

I feel I did a good job with the quality, but I do look forward for the next time when I can keep that same quality at a faster pace.

Cartoon Network 2D Storyboards: GENERATOR REX, Episode 028: "Badlands"

In 2010, I had the great fortune to storyboard for Cartoon Network on episodes of Generator Rex!

Storyboarding for such mainstream shows like Gen Rex is quite different sometimes than working for other boutique animation studios, which many times are hampered by terrible budgets and timeframes.  Cartoon Network is so very well structured in this regard.

My first episode of Generator Rex aired recently!  This is Episode 024: "Badlands".  It was really great to see how closely the animation kept to the boards I did.  Unfortunately for time constraints, they omitted a scene where a bad guy tried to run Rex over with his truck, which was cut in half by Rex's evo-morphed saw blade.

I love working for great people like my director Rick Morales, along with producer Ryan Slater & Production Assistant Donna Lau.  I learned a lot from them all.
